Martine's Victoire Bellevue 953 eTAP
The handcrafted road bike project
Martine and her husband François are ones of our most loyal clients. They first trusted us by ordering a pair of bespoke Victoire MTB. You can find Martine's one in our creations section.
With François, Martine has started to ride more and more in the last 5 years :
" Progressively, I realized that I needed a more performant bicycle. At the same time, we discovered Victoire".
Very happy with their first experience with Victoire products, the couple decided to trust us a second time for a double bespoke road bike project :
"We are proud to be part of the first Victoire customers, and to be ambassadors of the brand. Our MTB always catch the attention during our rides. Moreover, we like to trust in young people who start an exciting project and work well. If we are happy with their work, we are loyal to them."
For her road bike project, Martine wanted a comfortable bicycle, cycle-touring oriented.
The tailored geometry
The bike fitting made in our workshop enabled to determine the ideal position of our client. She felt the most comfortable with the handlebar at the same level as the saddle. It enables her to easily change her position to avoid any numbing in the hands.
To get this position and avoid any toe overlap, the length of the top tube was increased and the stem shortened. The geometry was designed to provide a safe handling to the bicycle : the fork angle and rake were adjusted to increase the stability whereas the chainstays are 415mm long to extend the wheelbase.
The bottom bracket is designed to lower the gravity centre of the bike and avoid the use of a too long headtube while keeping saddle and handlebar at the same level. The frame has an important sloping to step over it easily, an important point for a 1,62m woman.
Reynolds 953 stainless steel tubing
Why using high end stainless steel tubing - like Reynolds 953 or Columbus XCR - on cycle-touring oriented bicycle ? We start to get a good experience of stainless steel tubing, and we could realized by testing different configuration - like on the Veloce Rapha or the randonneuse of Concours de Machines - that it is as interesting for a performance oriented bike as for a comfort oriented one.
To present quickly some technical datas, in the Reynolds range, the tensile strength of stainless steel is 42% higher than the 853, their most advanced steel, and 100% higher than the 631, that is equivalent to the Columbus Zona. With the same diameter and thickness, a more high-end material will be more resistant. So, for a same resistance, we can choose a lower diameter and thickness for a high-end material tubing : it is precisely the way to increase the comfort of a bicycle.
Martine's project, based on Reynolds 953 stainless steel tubing, is a perfect illustration. Thanks to her light weight, we could select small tubing for her Bellevue. It enables to filter well road bumps and save weight, for a handling equal to a frame built with bigger tubing of less prestigious material.
For this tailored Bellevue, the top tube and the down tube measure respectively 28,6 and 31,7mm. They are butted with a 0,35mm thickness. The 1"1/8e headtube fit the custom fork also made of Reynolds 953 stainless steel. The bend of the blades brings additional comfort.
Like her husband, she chose an electric SRAM eTAP groupset : easy to use, a light push is enough to shift gears. With change the 50T chainring of the SRAM Red crankset by a 48T from Spécialités T.A, to get a ratio that suits perfectly her riding style. The SRAM Red 11-32 cassette complete the groupset. The wheels were laced by hand in house with 24H Velocity A24 rims and Chris King R45 hubs.
Martine wanted a bicycle mainly white, with some touch of colours. She selected the "Turquoise" for her Chris King parts and then she gave us carte blanche for the paint scheme of her handcrafted road bicycle. So we selected a « Sahkir orange » to match the parts and the white. The right chainstay is left raw to highlight the stainless steel and the whole bicycle received a ceramic clear coat finish, the most resistant of our catalog.
It was a complete surprise for Martine when she discovered her bicycle, but she is really happy with the result :
"Wow ! Aesthetically, it is subtle elegant and feminine. I like a lot the association of colours. Moreover, I feel very comfortable on it ! "
