The project

Laurent has been cycling since he was born, first for commuting, then for randonnees and finally for competition. He contacted us with very precise demands, and gave us a 5 pages long specifications note, detailing his needs, wants and tastes.

Cycling is a pleasure for me but also a lifestyle. Therefore, I'd like a bike that will stay by my side for years. The project is about an allround bike which I shall use all year long: for my daily journeys, the sportive ones as well as going on holidays, with bags. I need a responsive bike, sportive, able to carry bags and sometimes go on paths. It has to be safe in downhill. If it had 4 wheels and an engine, then it would be a sportive station wagon as the German manufacturers offer.

Our client also had a precise idea of the aesthetic he wanted for his bike:

I'd like my bike to give a sportive and dynamic impression, and contemporary. Its design needs to be harmonious and  have balanced proportions. Generally, I like clean aesthetics.

The frame

We used  Tange Prestige Japan tubing for the front triangle : 31.7mm for the top tube and 34.9mm ones for the down tube. Combined with the 44mm head tube, it gives a nice compromise between comfort and sportiness. Bent chainstays and seat stays are from the Zona range by Columbus. Laurent is used to riding with 28mm tires but the bike can fit ones up to 38mm with fenders. The frame is equipped with all the necessary eyelets for long trips and randonnees. In his specification note, our client wanted a discreet fitting. The rack and fenders's eyelets are inside the seat stays.

The frame is equipped with all the eyelets for long trips. Laurent wanted the rack and the fender eyelets to be independant. We put them inside the seatstays, to make them almost invisible and avoid any contact between the two elements.

The bespoke fork is inspired from the ones of our 650B randonneur prototypes. It also has all the eyelets to fit a front rack like a Tubus Tara, but also additional bottle cages or bigger one like the Salsa Anything Cage. The fork is designed to support disc braking and panniers. The 3D dropouts are welded in order to offer some flexibility. They were customized to adapt the SON SL dynamo hub system.

Equipments

The assembly is made with reliable and efficient components. Hence, we can find a single chain SRAM drive train, mixing the Apex and Rival ranges. The Garbaruk chainring with 36 teeth is associated with the 11 speeds cassette 11-42 which help pass the hills without any difficulties, even when loaded. The braking system is an hydraulic disc one, for maximum security downhill. Finally, as Laurent's bespoke bike will be used both for daily journeys and long trips, it needs to bring him comfort and safety whatever the conditions are. Hence, the Supernova lights powered by the SON dynamo enable him to stay noticeable, and the SKS fenders will keep him dry in the case of a bad weather.

First impressions

When he discovered his bike, Laurent was pleased by the result: "It's beautiful, it's the style I desired"

Directly after he received it in our workshop, he tested it on the ground. He joined the Love Tour organized by 200 magazine from Clermont-Ferrand to Vassivière. He shares with us his first impressions:

The Victoire's first ride was the Ceyssat pass. I like the symbol. It rode the entire week-end on the roads of Massif Central, Limousin, Creuse, where it participated to one of the Love Tour stage. It then started its commuter life, around Paris. I can only tell the pleasure I feel when I ride this bike: it's splendid, enduring, brave, reactive and playful. It meets all my requirements. It's true that the multiple delays made me feel a bit doubtful and afraid to be disappointed, but my bespoke Victoire erased all these fears in a minute. I can ride it for hours without feeling any tiredness. It climbs nervously and has a reassuring precision downhill. I thank the Victoire team for the well-done job.

Laurent will have the opportunity to fully enjoy his bike during many more kilometers this summer as he is planning a 3-weeks long trip with it in August.
