Tristan Beaufils 9th at Nice Ironman with his Victoire Vitesse
Tristan Beaufils, owner of our first bespoke steel TT bike, achieved an incredible performance at the latest Nice Ironman : less than a year after his first triathlon - he rode on his Victoire Virage fixed gear - he is ranked 9th overall and 1st of his 18-24 category. He won his slot to Hawai to compete at the Ironman World Championship. Throwback to a day Tristan will never forget :
After a short night, I get up at 4am. It is time for the sport cake breaksfast. I put my trifunction on, stick my 454 tattoo, and go to the start. It is still dark in the bike park. You can feel the tension. I inflate my Victoire tubulars, calibrate my power meter and prepare my bidons. It is time. I join Ines and Martin on the beach. The national anthem, La Marseillaise, rings out in tribute to the victims of Nice terrorist attack, and then it is the start.
I find my pace behind Martin and Ines. I save my energy during 3.8km. It will be a long day. A very long day. I go out from the water with difficulty, stumble to my Victoire Vitesse, and start to overtake some competitors. I am 490th at this time.
The first part is flat and I overtake a lot of people. Then it is the first climb, les Condamines. It is steep. My aim was to climb in 2mn on my lowest ratio : 50*42. My Victoire and my legs are here, it will be a good day.
On the bike, I take many snacks. The kilometers go and I continue to overtake a lot of people. I feel good. The landscapes are stunning. Then it is the climb of col de l'Ecre. I manage my self and follow my watts, I have to save as many energy as I can for the marathon.
At 120K, I meet Antho and Aymeric. It is good to see them and it gives me some motivation. I go fast at the start of the downhill but I calm down when I see pro who crashed. The last kilometers to the bike park are long, with a strong head wind. Nevermind, I like it ! I have a look at my watt : 283, goal achieved ! I am confident for the marathon. I leave my bike in the park. It is almost empty so I wonder I rode well. I hear I am 25th, so I overtake 465 people.
After a quick transition, I put my socks, my shoes and my cap on , and I run to my IM speed at 15 km/h. I run with the 4th during my 1st lap, but he does not look super happy with my company. At each refreshment point I get my own routine : 1 glass of water, 1 of energy drink, and a last of water on my head. At each lap, I take one shot of gel until the finish line.
During this marathon, I see my mates come from Lille. Antho tells me that the slot for Kona is in the pocket and the top 10 is within my reach. I can not realize ! I keep my pace of 4:00/km until km25. After that my legs are hard, my speed goes down but the support of my family and my friends pushes me. In the latest 5 km I feel euphoric and I forget the pain. I see the finish line and I am overwhelmed by the emotion. I fall on my knees immediately after the finsh line and I start to cry. I can not believe ! 9th in 9h18, sub3 on the marathon and qualified for Hawai after just a year of triathlon and my first Ironman.
